A DISTURBING PATTERN: Griffith Votes Against the Interests of SWVA Residents and then Shows Up to Take Credit and Cut RibbonsOn August 31st, Morgan Griffith posted photos of himself in Bedford County celebrating rural broadband development funding from the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program that was part of the Biden administration’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). “Rural Virginia wins when we develop access to broadband!” crowed Griffith’s post about the event.

There’s only one problem: Griffith took to his web site to slam the bill only days after voting against it in November 2021. “I could not support a bill that was touted as a landmark yet would have so little impact on the people I serve.”, Griffith said at the time. “I am skeptical this bill will be as transformative as advertised in rural areas.”

Bedford County’s project is funded through the $1.4 billion Virginia received through the BEAD program, and will connect approximately 1,600 homes in the county to high-speed broadband. Griffith didn’t let the fact that he actively tried to stop this funding keep him from posing for a photo op in front of a fiber laying machine.

The massive broadband rollouts aren’t the only political fruits of the IIJA that Griffith has been eager to harvest. He’s also issued multiple press releases touting airport upgrades from the Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program created by the bill. “Structural and capacity improvements to airports in our region are worthwhile investments,” Griffith claimed in an August 2025 press release. “I’m excited about the $15,014,525 worth of grants to our region’s airports.” A portion of the money Griffith was referring to came from the AIG program that he voted against.

The last time Griffith had to win re-election, he spoke to the Virginia Mercury: “In June, Griffith touted his role in securing a $1.6 million federal grant benefitting the Piedmont Planning District’s Commission’s Route 122 Regional Corridor Plan, which was funded under the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in 2021 — which he voted against.”

There’s a pattern here: Morgan Griffith repeatedly votes against the interests of his constituents in Southwest Virginia, then takes credit for the progress made by others in Congress. We deserve better.

While other parts of the state have representatives working to drive economic development and infrastructure investment in their areas, Morgan Griffith’s 9th District Constituents are left hoping that their own representative doesn’t derail the progress.
